Beauties on Fire: Summer Style

Hey everyone! It’s once again Thursday, AKA time for the next Beauties on Fire post! This week’s theme is summer style.

Beauties on Fire is a group of around 25 fashion, beauty, and lifestyle bloggers who will all make a post based on a theme each week! It’s all being headed by the wonderful Elisabeth over at Everything and Nothin’!

So summer for me is hot and humid. It’s gotten up to the 90s for the past week and a half or so and can feel like you’re breathing underwater at times. How do you wear makeup in these sorts of conditions?

Most people and magazines say to go lighter on makeup in the summer. In past summers, I’ve never really followed that, but this year, I have. I’m a lot more careful about what I’m slathering on my face and if it’s giving me acne or clogging pores. Most days, I don’t even wear any makeup.

So what do I wear for makeup in the summer?

BB or CC cream is my salvation. It can give light coverage and SPF. I like using it as a primer under foundation (and my foundation seems to lay on my skin better with it than normal primers) or on its own. On its own, I find that my skin can breathe very easily – a light sweat from walking around in the sun or getting into a roasting hot car doesn’t mess up the makeup. Today I’m using the Smashbox Camera Ready BB cream, which is my favorite for how it just blends in and looks like I’m not even wearing anything while still giving me SPF 35.

Next is liquid highlighter, like the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Spotlight in Opal. I like the look of liquid better than powder a bit, because it looks a bit more realistic and is less likely to draw attention to pores. I just tap it in along my cheekbones, down the center of my nose, and a tiny bit above the outside of my brows. I don’t put any on my chin because it’s very oily and I don’t like putting extra makeup on it.100_3976

Concealer time! I only conceal my undereye area, not any acne. I start with something a bit darker than my skin, like the Anastasia concealer in 3.0, and decide if that’s enough coverage or if I want to lighten it up with a concealer that matches my skin. Today I just used the one before setting it with a translucent powder.

Onto bronzer! If I use a BB cream, I don’t always wear bronzer or contour. I’m fine without, and all the redness from acne scars just looks worse if I’m not careful with applying bronzer without a more full-coverage foundation. Today, I’m using theBalm Balm Desert. It’s going on my cheekbones and up onto my temples a bit. I finish off the face with the Nyx HD Blush in Pink the Town.100_3987

Now it’s time for eyes! There are two main kind of summer eye looks: nudes and brights. I’m playing around with my new Cargo Land Down Under palette. The sky’s the limit with bright colors – a wing, a lower waterline, an entire lid, even just a crease or accent color! Today’s look is the first time I really reached for the two blue shades in the palette, Manly and Bondi, with Koala, Joey, Opera, Ferry, and Sand as accent shades, which is an excessive number of shades, but I’m still playing around with the palette.

To finish off the eyes, I used the Eyeko Skinny Mini liquid eyeliner pen, the Doucce Precision Eyeliner, and the W3ll People Expressionist Concealer. I really love a bolder eye look, and unless I’m going swimming or something I don’t really find that I need to alter my eye makeup for summer. I don’t understand how people need waterproof mascara on a daily basis, and find that lightening up with face makeup means that I can go all-out with the eyes!100_4005

I like keeping brows simple in the summer. Most of the time, I just use a brow gel like the new Benefit Gimme Brow in 3/Medium to really lock in a shape and add a bit of oomph to my brows.

Finally, lips! I reach for more pinks in summer, and today was the Tarte Amazonian Butter Lipstick in Sweet Peach.100_4001

  3. I need to get my breakouts under control enough to rock just BB Cream. #SummerGoals… #FallGoals? Also you using Gimme Brow in 003 helped me realize its way too dark for me because it looks fabulous on you and I canNOT pull it off.

I’m so glad I found your blog through this collab and you, my dear, are very much deserving of the One Lovely Blogger award you’ve been nominated for today 🙂

    • I totally understand with breakouts – I’ll usually wear foundation with a higher coverage for things like class and church. And when I first bought Gimme Brow last year I was completely torn because they only had two shades and I was right in between… And thanks for the nomination, girl! I’m also pretty amazed by your blog and so happy that we’ve been able to meet through this collab!

I never though I would *need* blue eyeshadow in my life, but this shade is that gorgeous. This look is so pretty. As for those people who always wear waterproof mascara, I’m one of them-my contacts can make my eyes water and the last thing I want is black streaks happening throughout the day 🙂 I nominated you for the Liebster award btw.
